Getting started

Where do I get Echofiles?

For Windows 10 and 11, from the Microsoft Store. For Mac (macOS 13 or later), from the Mac App Store, or download it. For Linux, with one command: see Echofiles for Linux. For iPhone and iPad, from the App Store. For Android, from Google Play, or download the APK.

How do I add another computer?

Install Echofiles on it and sign in with the same Ontiqo account (Google, Apple, Microsoft or email address). It then appears on the Computers page of your other computers, and their folders appear under On your other computers, each with Sync here.

How does Echofiles compare with other sync apps?

See Echofiles compared: a table against Syncthing, Resilio Sync, Dropbox, OneDrive and GoodSync.

What does it cost?

Echofiles is free, and computers on the same network sync for free. Internet sync, for computers on different networks, is a one-off purchase of US$19.99 (the store shows the price in your currency).

How does internet sync work?

Buy it once on the Account page in Echofiles, on any of your devices. It belongs to your Ontiqo account, so it covers every computer, phone and tablet signed in to it, and a new or reinstalled one only needs to sign in.

Bought in the Microsoft Store, on Linux, or in the versions downloaded from this site, it turns on by itself once paid. If you bought it in the Mac App Store and it shows Internet sync: not on, choose Restore Purchases on the Account page, signed in to the App Store with the Apple ID you bought it with.

Phones and tablets

How does Echofiles work on a phone or tablet?

As on a computer: sign in with the same Ontiqo account, and the folders your computers sync appear under On your other computers, each with Sync here. On the same Wi‑Fi it syncs for free; with internet sync, from anywhere.

A phone syncs at once while Echofiles is open, and in the background when the system lets it: Android shows a quiet notification while it works, and iOS gives apps time now and then. The phone catches up the next time you open Echofiles.

What are files on request?

A big folder on a phone can keep its files on request: every file shows, and each downloads when you open it, so the phone holds what you use. Choose it when you choose Sync here, or later in the folder's menu. To have a file or folder without a connection, choose Keep on this phone; Remove download frees the space again, and the file stays on your other devices.

Echofiles' folders are also in the Files app on Android, iPhone and iPad, and in other apps' file pickers, with every file listed. On an iPhone or iPad, a file on request opens from the Files app while Echofiles can run, which iOS allows unless you have closed Echofiles by swiping it away.

How does the camera roll sync?

Add it on the Folders page. New photos and videos arrive on your computers as ordinary files, and pictures added on a computer appear in Photos. On iPhone and iPad, iOS asks before any app deletes or changes a photo, so a photo deleted or changed on a computer waits until you confirm it on the camera roll's row in Echofiles.

Syncing

A computer says “On another network”

Without internet sync, computers sync only when they are on the same network. That computer syncs again when it is back on the same network as the others, or from anywhere once your account has internet sync.

Two computers on the same network can’t see each other

Usually the network keeps them apart. A guest Wi‑Fi network is often separate from the main one, and some routers and mesh Wi‑Fi systems have a “client isolation” setting that must be off. On Windows, set the network to Private (Settings › Network & internet › your connection › Network profile type).

If a firewall blocks incoming connections, allow UDP 47780 and 47782 and TCP 47781.

A file did not sync

Echofiles picks up a file once it has stopped changing for a couple of seconds. It skips some files on purpose: temporary and partial downloads (.tmp, .part, .partial, .crdownload, .download), Office and LibreOffice lock files (~$…, .~lock.…), Thumbs.db, .DS_Store and desktop.ini, and .git and node_modules folders.

How do I get a replaced or deleted file back?

Open Recovered files and choose Restore. When another computer replaces or deletes a file, the copy that was on this computer is kept there for 30 days.

Two computers changed the same file

The most recent save wins on every computer. The other version is kept in Recovered files on the computer that had it, for 30 days.

Your account

I didn’t get the sign-in code email

Check the spam or junk folder, and that the address was typed correctly. The code comes from noreply@echofiles.app.

How do I delete my account?

On the Account page, choose Delete account. The Echofiles service erases the account and its list of computers, and every computer on it is signed out. Files in your synced folders stay on each computer.

How do I remove Echofiles from one computer?

Sign out on the Account page, then uninstall it like any app. Your folders and files stay where they are. On Linux, run curl -fsSL https://echofiles.app/install.sh | sh -s -- --uninstall; see Echofiles for Linux.

The earlier Echofiles app

I use the earlier Echofiles app. How do I move?

Install the current Echofiles and sign in on each computer, add your folders in it, then quit and uninstall the earlier app. Don’t run both on the same folder at the same time.
